Moiré excitons in van der Waals Materials with Gang Lu

Gang Lu (hosted by Xi Wang) from California State University, Northridge will be presenting the Condensed Matter / Biophysics Seminar on Moiré excitons in van der Waals Materials.

Understanding excited state phenomena is at the heart of many important materials problems, such as photovoltaics, photocatalysis, plasmonics and quantum information. In this talk, I will briefly introduce large-scale first-principles methods that we have recently developed based on the time-dependent density functional theory with hybrid functionals. Using these methods, we have examined electron excitations in twisted 2D van der Waals heterostructures, including moiré excitons, moiré and magnetic proximity effects, and unconventional Bose-Einstein condensation of quadrupolar moiré excitons.
