He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Physics at Washington University in St. Louis, where he works with Mikhail Tikhonov. Before joining Washington University, Yamagishi was a Special Postdoctoral Researcher at the Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research, RIKEN. He received his PhD from the University of Tokyo, where he studied theoretical biophysics and complex systems under the supervision of Kunihiko Kaneko and Shuji Ishihara.

 

His research combines ideas and methods from nonequilibrium statistical physics and nonlinear dynamics, as well as mathematical economics. At the cellular level, he develops theoretical frameworks for understanding metabolic perturbation responses, microbial growth laws, and the thermodynamic constraints that shape cellular physiology. At the community level, he studies how metabolic interactions, including metabolite exchange and cross-feeding, influence microbial coexistence, community assembly, and responses to environmental change.
